The 6 Life-Savers
Blood + Breath
The 6 Life-Savers
Bleeding kills in 3–5 minutes. A blocked airway kills in under 4. These six items — and the knowledge to use them — are the ones that buy you those minutes.
Blood — stop the bleed
kills in 3–5 minTourniquet (CAT Gen 7)
Stops catastrophic bleeding from an arm or leg in seconds — windlass clamps the limb above the wound.
A severed artery empties in 3–5 minutes. A tourniquet is mechanical — it works no matter what medication you’re on. The single highest-impact item you can carry.
💡 Mechanical — works regardless of blood thinners.
T-Ring (finger & thumb tourniquet)
A one-size ring that stops bleeding from a finger or thumb — the most common travel laceration.
Coral cuts, knife slips, and dock injuries almost always hit fingers. A T-Ring is the right tool — a limb tourniquet is overkill and an adhesive bandage isn’t enough.
Hemostatic gauze (Celox)
Pack it into a deep wound and it clots the blood on contact — the “blood coagulant” that stops what pressure alone can’t.
For wounds a tourniquet can’t reach (torso, neck, groin). Celox clots even if you’re on blood thinners — the difference between controllable and fatal for an older traveler.
💡 Celox (chitosan) works on anticoagulated patients; choose it over QuikClot for blood-thinner travelers.
Pressure / trauma bandage (Israeli)
A sterile dressing with a built-in pressure bar that applies and holds firm pressure on a heavy wound — one-handed.
The workhorse of bleeding control. Stops the bleed you can apply pressure to, and frees your hands to manage everything else.
Breath — open the airway
kills in under 4 minCPR rescue-breath barrier (mouth-to-mouth tube)
A one-way valve pocket mask that lets you give rescue breaths safely — no direct mouth-to-mouth contact.
When a heart stops, breaths + compressions keep the brain alive until help arrives. The barrier removes the hesitation that costs the first, most important minute.
Anti-choking device (LifeVac)
A one-way suction device that pulls a lodged object out of the airway when back-blows and thrusts fail.
Choking kills in under 4 minutes — faster than any ambulance. One device covers adults, children, and infants. FDA Class II cleared, ~98% success in reported uses.
Carrying the gear is half of it — knowing how to use it is the other half. The in-app Emergency button walks you through bleeding and choking, step by step, offline. TravelWell may earn a commission on items bought through our partners, at no extra cost to you.

Why this kit exists
Five items most likely to save your life
Pulse Oximeter
Catches altitude sickness before it becomes fatal. Essential on any trip above 2,500m — Kilimanjaro, Machu Picchu, Nepal, Tibet.
Israeli Pressure Bandage
Arterial bleeding control. The difference between a bad wound and a fatal one on a remote trek or road in the developing world.
Oral Rehydration Salts (×4)
Traveler's diarrhea is the #1 cause of medical evacuation in the developing world. ORS stops the dehydration cascade before it becomes an emergency.
SAM Splint
Immobilizes fractures and serious sprains on remote trails until evacuation arrives. Weighs 90 grams. Has ended many evacuation nightmares.
TravelWell Emergency Contacts Card
Laminated, 4 languages. When you can't speak and your phone is dead, this card tells first responders who you are, where your insurance is, and who to call. The most underrated item in any kit.
