Barbados punches well above its size — 21 miles long, 14 miles wide, and yet it contains the Caribbean's most famous hotel address (Sandy Lane), the world's oldest rum brand (Mount Gay, 1703), a UNESCO World Heritage capital city, and an east coast surf break that draws the planet's best wave riders. The west (Platinum Coast) is calm Caribbean water, manicured beach clubs, and old-money villa estates. The south is livelier — the Gap, Accra Beach, younger crowds, more accessible prices. The east is raw Atlantic: Bathsheba's Soup Bowl, stone formations, wild surf, and the real Barbados that most package tourists never find. On Friday nights, the whole island descends on Oistins Fish Fry — fresh mahi-mahi grilling outdoors, Banks beer, rum punch, and a crowd that is 80% Bajans. It is the most honest version of what Caribbean travel can be.

Safety
Safety Overview
Barbados
Barbados is one of the safest islands in the Caribbean — consistently so. It has a stable democracy, well-functioning judiciary, and professional police force. Crime against tourists is mostly opportunistic theft, not violence. The Level 1 US State Department advisory reflects genuine safety, not diplomatic courtesy. The FCDO 'some risk' rating applies blanket-style to the entire Caribbean and overstates the actual risk in Barbados specifically. Tourists who take normal urban precautions face very low risk.
