Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

The Enchanted Isles

Darwin's living laboratory — 127 islands where evolution never stopped, and the animals still have no fear of you.

At a glance · 5 reasons to go

Why Galápagos Islands, Ecuador.

  1. 127 islands, 1,000 km west of Ecuador, where the cold Humboldt Current meets the warm Panama Current — a nutrient upwelling that drives one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet.97% is protected as Galápagos National Park.

  2. A million years of isolation produced wildlife with no fear response to terrestrial predators. The sea lion in the middle of the footpath decides you're neither threat nor interest and returns to sunbathing. You step around it.

  3. Liveaboard vs. land-based is the fundamental planning question: only liveaboards reach the outer islands (Fernandina's flightless cormorants and lava fields, Española's waved albatross, Genovesa's red-footed boobies — the largest colony on earth).

  4. World-class diving at Wolf and Darwin islands: hammerhead aggregations, whale sharks patrolling the blue, marine iguanas grazing algae at 15 m depth (the only ocean-swimming lizard on Earth), Galápagos penguins porpoising alongside snorkellers.

  5. Logistics are strict: USD $100 National Park fee at the airport, USD $20 Transit Control Card online before travel, licensed vessels and guides only. The bureaucracy is what keeps the Galápagos functioning as the Galápagos.

The sea lion looks at you. You look at the sea lion. The sea lion decides you are neither threatening nor interesting and returns to lying in the sun in the middle of the footpath. You step around it. This is the Galápagos Islands, where a million years of isolation produced wildlife that never developed a fear response to terrestrial predators, and where humans — present as a regulated, managed category of visitor since 1959 — have not disabused it of that assessment.

The Galápagos Archipelago sits 1,000 kilometres west of Ecuador in the Pacific, where the cold Humboldt Current from Antarctica meets the warm Panama Current from the north. The collision of these water masses produces an upwelling of nutrients that supports one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet and, over geological time, drove the explosive adaptive radiation that gave Darwin his theory of evolution by natural selection. He visited in 1835 on the Beagle for five weeks. He later said he was not thinking about evolution at the time. The significance crystallised later, back in England, studying the finch specimens he had barely bothered to label.

Ninety-seven percent of the archipelago's land area is protected as Galápagos National Park — the remaining three percent is human settlement. The 127 islands range from the youngest (Fernandina, geologically active, with lava fields and flightless cormorants hauling themselves over black basalt) to the old and weathered (Española, covered in sea lions, Nazca boobies, and waved albatross staging grounds that constitute one of the world's great wildlife spectacles). Each island is a distinct ecosystem, shaped by its age, elevation, and position relative to the ocean currents. Genovesa — Darwin's Bay — rises from a volcanic caldera and hosts the largest red-footed booby colony on earth. Santa Cruz contains the Charles Darwin Research Station and the tortoise breeding program that has returned giant tortoises to several islands from which they were hunted to near-extinction.

The decision between a liveaboard cruise and a shore-based visit from Santa Cruz is the fundamental Galápagos planning question. The answer depends on what you want. Liveaboard vessels — ranging from eight-day itineraries on boutique 16-passenger yachts to fifteen-day expeditions covering every major island group — are the only way to reach the outer islands (Fernandina, Española, Genovesa, Marchena). The outer islands are where the most dramatic and undisturbed wildlife concentrations live. A shore-based visit from Santa Cruz's Puerto Ayora constrains you to the central islands — still extraordinary, but incomplete. The liveaboard is always the better choice if the budget allows.

Underwater, the Galápagos is one of the world's premier dive destinations. Hammerhead shark aggregations at Wolf and Darwin islands. Whale sharks patrolling the deep blue off Darwin's Arch. Marine iguanas grazing on algae at fifteen metres depth — the only ocean-swimming lizard on Earth. Galápagos penguins (the world's northernmost penguin species) porpoising alongside snorkellers in the clear, cold upwelling water of Fernandina Channel.

The logistics are managed but require attention. The National Park entry fee is USD $100 per person (paid at the airport). A Transit Control Card (USD $20) must be purchased online before travel. Only licensed vessels and guides can operate in the park. Visitor sites operate on a permit system that limits simultaneous access. This management framework — strict, sometimes bureaucratic — is what keeps the Galápagos functioning as the Galápagos. The blue-footed booby performing its courtship dance on the rock ten metres from your feet is an argument for it.

安全

Safety Overview

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Very Good

The Galápagos Islands are significantly safer than mainland Ecuador. Ecuador has a US Level 3 advisory due to organised crime, but this does not apply to the islands, which function as a protected national park with strict entry controls. Island crime affecting tourists is exceptionally rare. The main risks are marine — strong currents, rocky terrain, and seasickness on liveaboards crossing between islands.

Traveller Notes

  • Never touch, feed, or approach wildlife. Minimum 2-metre distance enforced.
  • Plastic bags are prohibited in the islands.
  • Seasickness medication recommended for liveaboard guests.
  • Budget USD 200+ for park fees and transit control card.
