Tucked into the Rif Mountains of northern Morocco, Chefchaouen is the famous “Blue Pearl” — a medina painted in a hundred shades of indigo and sky. Founded in 1471 and long a refuge for Andalusian Muslims and Jews fleeing Spain, it has a Spanish-Andalusian softness the rest of Morocco doesn’t share. It’s slower, cooler and easier than the imperial cities — a place to wander, photograph, and breathe mountain air.
